prolific swiss producer mirko loko (cadenza...) makes his second appearance on the visionquest imprint, this time with special two-tracker >featuring< in which mirko collaborates on a duo of epic sonic voyages with vocalist jaw and classical pianist francesco tristano.

after several years expanding hemlocks roster, untold returns to the label with his own brand new cache of shape-shifting, sonic mastery. this is his first release on hemlock since the seminal >gonna work out fine ep< changed the game in 2009, part one of a triple ep set, >change in a dynamic environment< is the sound of a boy brought up on jungle pirates, once again smudging the edges of house/techno/bass/ oh whatever … just listen.

the title track on tychos long-awaited dive lp is just that — a ripple effect record that sounds like three songs in one, as if sound/graphic designer scott hansen just discovered progrock and decided to apply its winding passages to his own singular blend of sinewy synths and bleached beats. its also the first tycho song to feature a prominent guest musician, guitarist zac brown, in this case, who paints outside the lines of hansens halcyon hooks with restless rhythms and monorail-like riffs. the >dive< single fleshes things out even further, as keep shelly in athens and memoryhouse — both rising underground artists in their own right — cut hansens cloud-scraping composition in half and slow his cruise control chords down to a crawl. the misty vocal melodies are still there, but they are now floating through an embryonic assembly of jittery cicadas, rusty gears, and lean loops that are both welcoming and a bit woozy. the sonic equivalent of staring at the sun for too long, really, or two sides of the same cracked mirror.

brand new project out of italy from obtanes francesco baudazzi ! features printed insert in clear poly bag francesco baudazzi, sometimes known as obtane amongst other secretive pseudonyms, is an electro-acoustic sound artist hailing from the tyrrhenian coast between la spezia and carrara on the west coast of italy and is renowned for producing truly dark atmospheric and droning conceptual music, enlivened with subtle, spacious field recordings and analogue synthesis. running the highly regarded zooloft recordings alongside giorgio gigli for the last five years. francesco has managed to create a highly respected sound dipping heavily into drone and industrial techniques, whilst retaining the truly hypnotic sound of early italian electronic music. making guest appearances away from his zooloft imprint label under his obtane monicker on labels such as synewave, sonic groove and strobescopic artefacts. surface welcome francescos first release under his birth name, for part two of the surface limited series focusing on the diversity that artists have to offer away from the constraints of their expected roles amongst the scene

following releases on mathematics, boxfade and vuzkid, chris moss acid returns with an extraterrestrial four tracker on holland’s 030303. the a-side features bay of cadiz, an eleven minute cut built around an hypnotic bass line and a simple hitchcockian synth that would do well in a horror movie featuring zombies with smiley faces. on the flip, lynchette matravers is an energetic, crystal clear banger reminding of early 808 state. the big freeze sounds a lot warmer than the title suggests and should please anyone into afx’s later output. the rhythm, the fourth and last track on the ep, continues on that vibe with beautiful synth work. chris moss may look like a nutter, this sure is serious sonic pleasure

where the river turns black, is the first international album by copenhagenresident and musician katrine ottosen aka call me kat. call me kat are adorably intense and mesmerizing songs, an enchanting melancholic, almost translucent drift into this sonic world best described as alternative pop, music that gives spoken word of the ever expanding danish music scene of now. songs that adapt a fine line between organic instrumentation and that very specific sound of her voice, which although completely its own tends to remind at times on other playful ladies in music like bjørk, feist oder lykke li.earlier works with reknown producers valgeir sigurdsson (bjørk, mum, sigur rós etc.) or joe magistro (prophet omega) on the current album have certainly had their share on this.

mute welcomes a brand new era with the birth of their latest electronic associate label, liberation technologies. citing reference from mutes original and continuing statement of intent, the label exists to give space to and encourage artists to experiment and challenge themselves, anonymously if they choose. the first release on liberation technologies is the >spring ep< by king felix, a producer from ann arbor, michigan who has also released music as laurel halo. the spring ep draws from a melee of influences, sharply carving out its own sonic palette. driving and dramatic, its an uplifting theme-and-variation exercise on oscillation and forward motion.

the new ep from memoria comes from fast-rising romanian producer vid whose previous outings have come on labels including fear of flying and barraca music. vid (vidum) aka sorin rastoaca is a producer obsessed with nature and organic sounds. his latest release >rebirth<, is stripped but not light on feeling, and mines a vein somewhere between deep house and minimal techno. etime is a fluttery, eerie cut that works on many subtle layers. like the feathery minimal percussion of villalobos, the romanians sounds present like flapping butterfly wings as a kick drum punches out a varied pattern below. poem is a little louder and bolder, with a firm rolling kick drum and drunken, wubby sounds running right through its core. plenty of sonic details flesh out the languorous but slightly tribal groove. rebirth is again about little tiny details and how they evolve with time, but the framework they inhabit this time is deep, late-night house with gentle tinkles on keys coming over like a fluttering candle in the dark. 3729 gets its head down and mines a shifty, itching and tight minimal groove, closing out an ep which shows vid to be a master of working minimum sounds into maximum effects.

whilst some people claim that the number seven is lucky, some people, like duff, dont believe in luck, or if there is such a thing as luck you make your own. you cant rely on anyone else to hold your hand you know, you gotsta forge your own path, they arent called the mean streets for nothing. duff is the sort of man who not only makes his own luck (cos who else is gonna look after you?) but he keeps an eye on his bredren too. those in the neighbourhood feel safe because all is good in duffs hood, always has been, always will be, the police dont even come there, because they don’t have to, that block is on lock-down brother. though he isnt some type of machismo, over-the-top (hat back go-on sly) caricature, its just the way it is, nuthin to argue about. he has a way about him, the glare of a pitbull and the smile of don juan, dusty is his girl yep thats her real name, the name her mamma gave her on the day she was introduced to this world. the girl is fine thats for sure but what else would you expect from the honey that rides shotgun with the sonic casanova. she might call herself lucky. duff would disagree.

imugem orihasam, offers a deep and introspective relation ep continuing the sistrum tradition of quality underground sounds for the true appreciators. track a1 - relation sets the tone right away, with soothing strings guiding a classic rhythm section into hypnotic territory. slowly, a tapestry of delicate textures evolves around the beats - sure to be the soundtrack to many a late night dancefloor. close your eyes and get inside your mind with this one. track b1 - “mirage” continues down the path of hypnotic, deep techno laid out on relation, toughening up the beats just a bit, with a subby kick and crisp back beat that gives it some extra punch. swirling, phasing strings and metallic, ring modulated tones float above a sub bassline that is sure to make things rumble. this is pure love from japan. track b2 - overlap lights (p. scott edit) - sistrum’s main man, patrice scott, steps in to offer his interpretation of imugem’s “overlap lights,” bringing forth his signature ultra deep, slow building future/classic detroit sound. patrice’s edit is a warm, delicate, masterful arrangement of imugem’s tones and textures - there never seems to be too much going on, just enough to convey his intended message, ever-so-effectively. clutter is left by the wayside and the listener is left with the perfect palette of sonic delights.

mike shannon steps up to the cityfox ltd plate and squeezes the jack juice on his latest offering for cityfox ltd entitled foxology. its a 3 track session of deep jazzy basslines and smooth cuts. we start things off with >foxology feat. flowing<, a twistedly deep smoothy of a house cut with shannons signature shuffle groove and warped dynamic basses featuring some wicked blues harp action from amsterdams flowing. foxologys b-side is home to >foxwell< and >zukunftstrasse<, the former being a rather hot number bubbling with bouncing bass, whereas >zukunftstrasse< is even more laid back and down tempo, while still playing your mind with it’s sonic insight to the distant future.

ellum audio gets set to unleash the >ellum sleazy riders collection< - a funk fuelled drive along a deep and dirty underground house highway featuring balearic bikers maceo plex, jacek janicki, sync mode (nitin) and luke solomon blazing a sonic trail across the dusty savannah of the musical badlands

the reasons of the space probes blackout are still unknown. sharp and synchronised movements revealed mysterious devices and something started to pulse in the cloudy air, followed by upbeat sonic layers. i thought i was listening to a new, indecipherable, form of language. at the same time, without any friction, the nature of the emission changed again into a sort of weaving of sonic textures twisting all around me, fast and shifty. the only evidence of the facts i just reported is what i leave for you to listen to.

as a team, we have renewed our brand and identity: we have grown strong as a musical family, so our name has grown too and become polegroup.for our 11th release, sound architect reeko brings us once more an ep made up of conceptual techno, which is suitable for the dance floor as well as for a quiet listening. he has created three tracks that concentrate on sonic details without neglecting its powerful rhythm.

hotflush presents the return of sigha with a new ep entitled >abstractions i-iv<, his sixth on the label. on this release he reaches into darker territory, beginning with a beatless, ambient suspension, drawing the listener in his submerged sonic sphere before dropping into a series of chilling compositions that seem to seethe and smolder at sub-zero temperatures, adorned with haunting electronic blips and synthetic machinations throughout. having already gathered support from many figures in the electronic world over the last year including marcel dettmann, brendon moeller and francois k, as well as making appearances on scubas recent dj-kicks mix compilation with >where i come to forget< amongst others, james shaw continues to make his mark with >abstractions<.

the first world unknown 12 inch of 2012 is a double header of throbbing midtempo techno and as with all world unknown releases from now on both tracks have been mastered for vinyl from ½ inch tape for maximum sonic excellence. on side w semtek from dont be afraid joins forces with his afterparty alter-ego chardonnay and a certain rather well known og hipster poet on >tacos for dinner<, an extremely modern and massively psychedelic trip into the outer mind. this clicking, bleeping, fizzing and throbbing ten minute excursion has been road tested from acetate by andy blake for many months and always sends the club somewhere very special and ever so slightly scary. on side u scott fraser delivers >remains the same<. its a notch or two less pacey than side w but no less powerful or psychedelic. its earthy vibe and pounding, throbbing tones have been part of andrew weatheralls sets for some time now and its not hard to see why. when the full percussion finally comes crunching in like a breakbeat on top of the ever-present heavyweight bassline its disco pandemonium time. in short, possibly the best 12 inch so far from wu.

after several appearances on the label, kareem comes up trumps again with an excellent first solo single release backed by a wonderful remix from white doyen oskar offermann himself.how low can you go the opener track acts as a discreet, structured, driving and some how dubby house tune that keeps a nice layer of grit beneath the fingernails. its loopy character imparts the feeling of virtually remaining unchanged but it nevertheless staidly evolves within its sonic borders and imparts a sensual quality of all-enveloping warmth. oskar offermanns interpretation of how low can you go introduces skipping melodies that are transmitted as choppy discoesque pulses and rhythmic modulated bass sounds are the preferred form of punctuation. indeed the remix is intended to be a dj tool, but like all of oskar offermanns recent house works, it builds smoothly as though every element was simply waiting in the wings to make its appearance at the proper moment, and – just before it finishes up – sounds like it could go on forever.

its now the turn of shapednoise for features series, and to complete this ep made of pure adrenaline theres the remix of the well known dino sabatini (outis music,sonic groove, prologue). shapednoise, one of the youngest and most promising artists of the techno scene, is based in berlin, fully living the repitch recordings project. his musical background is really wide, and you can notice it listening to his productions, a futuristic vision of the sound, with industrial elements and synthesizers characterizing his sonority. the second act of the series starts with white light white head: an out of ordinary track, an unusual beat, techno futuristic, that flows into a neo-industrial sound, with soundscapes that make it mental, but at the same time a post-apocalyptic dancefloor hit. dino sabatinis version hypnotizes us, manipulates shapednoises sounds las only he can do, with his incomparable personality, rhythmics and drone evolving until the end of a trip to the edge of reality. cosmic landscapes (the tiltle already tells a lot), is a track with very powerful rhythmics, for the lovers of straight-techno. shapednoise, an artist to absolutely keep an eyes on this year. also this time the artwork of pasquale ascione makes its part: surreal, unique, making you wondering where this faces come from, maybe from our dreams.features series is a whole of musicalities where images and imaginary interpenetrate. supported and played by norman nodge, perc, samuli kemppi, jonas kopp, marcel dettmann, adam x, tommy four seven, lucy, dvs1, pfirter and many others!

andras toth is not a nu-school producer. please refrain from adding up-and-coming to his biography. he has arrived. with his second full solo-ep on alphahouse records, he presents a varied and captivating look into the mind of an accomplished musician. following the success of his previous works on the label, his debut >us< and the collaborative ep >futures< with boss-man butane, >would u?< is a trip through improvisational jazz, open-air sunrises, and sonic after-hours explorations. herein lies real music, nothing formulaic, nothing safe. the ep embodies an ethos, held by alphahouse, that musicianship is about originality, not following trends. there is still much that remains good in the world of independent electronic dance music. we will continue to search for, and find it.

mika vainio, currently based in berlin, was one half of the minimal electronic duo pan sonic from finland, (the other half was ilpo väisänen). before starting pan sonic in beginning of the 90 s mika vainio has played electronics and drums as part of the early finnish industrial and noise scene. his solo works, under his own name and under aliases like Ø, are known for their analogue warmth and electronic harshness. be it abstract drone works or minimal avant techno, vainio is always creating unique, physical sounds.

vanguard sound vol. 3 is the maiden voyage of the vanguard sound label. the mothership is helmed by dj/producers amir alexander and chris mitchell of the vanguard crew. fellow crew members include hakim murphy, g. marcell, dakini9 (lola) and dj spider. the ep series continues with four high intensity bangers that kick ass and take names. stripped down to the core essence, these tracks will bring that left of center otherworldly flavor to your sonic atmosphere. violence!
